If you were patient enough to watch Tuesday’s vice presidential debate to its conclusion — or if, as in my own case, you were professionally obligated to remain sober and alert throughout — you saw something remarkable.

It was, perhaps, too meager a reward for such a heroic feat of endurance, purchased at too great a price for viewers who could have spent the same 96 minutes helping children with their homework, reading a good book, or making preparations for the coming nuclear winter.
