A 40-year-old woman plummeted about 30 feet from a Bay City bridge after fumbling her cellphone.
Just before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3, police, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to patch of land beneath Liberty Bridge on the city’s West Side for a woman who fell off the bridge. The woman called 911 herself from her cellphone after landing, said Bay City Public Safety Deputy Director Thomas Pletzke.
“The (Bay County) Sheriff’s Office were the ones who arrived first and located her,” Pletzke said. “She was located in a grassy area just north of Pier 7 Marina on the south side of Liberty Bridge.”
The woman was about 40 yards from the Saginaw River, Pletzke said. Pletzke estimated she fell about 30 to 32 feet.
Despite the fall, the woman was conscious when first responders located her, Pletzke said.
The woman was initially transported to McLaren Bay Region hospital, then moved to Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw to be treated for back injuries, Pletzke said.
